Disembarked Alexandria, 27 December 1915 (general Gallipoli evacuation). Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 30 March 1916. Appointed Lance Corporal, 1 April 1917. Wounded in action, 3 May 1917 (gun shot wound, left thigh), and admitted to 6th Australian Field Ambulance; transferred same day to 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station; to Ambulance Train No 11, 4 May 1917, and admitted to 11th Stationary Hospital, Rouen, 5 May 1917; transferred to England, 18 May 1917, and admitted same day to Northampton War Hospital (wound, slight). Transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 26 September 1917; discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 6 November 1917.
