'For great gallantry and devotion to duty. On 1 September, 1918, west of Haut Allaines, his company shortly after moving forward to the attack, encountered resistance from the enemy. Single handed he immediately rushed forward in face of heavy enemy rifle fire, and shot or bayoneted four of the enemy the remainder fleeing.'
