'On 4th August, 1917, at NIEUPORT the 16th Battery position was shelled from about 3 to 5 p.m. with 5.9", about 150 rounds falling in and about the battery position casuing it to be evacuated. One of the early shells hit a billet direct seriously wounding and burying two of the gunners under a wall. Gunner MOFFATT was in the room with them. The burst of the shell threw him outside. He immediately re-entered the building and with three others worked for some time uneer the shell fire, continuing until the men were almost cleared. Several shells burst immediately against the building during this period. He then went through the shelling to the Brigade Aid Post for medical assistance, returning with the stretcher and assisting to get the wounded men out. Throughout the period he showed the greatest determination, bravery, and devotion to his wounded comrades.'
