Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During an important operation carried out by his Battalion on the 4th/6th April, 1918, he was a Battalion Runner. As there were no other means of communication, and the battlefield was unfamiliar ground, a heavy responsibility fell on a few runners. During the whole of 36 critical hours this soldier remained on duty, and though thoroughly fatigued, continued with great determination and spirit to keep in touch with companies in new and constantly changing situations, despite the fact that all avenue of approach were swept by close machine gun fire, and every moving object was an immediate target to numerous enemy snipers. His eagerness, bravery, and tireless energy had an excellent effect on all the runners and gave them the stimulus which was necessary to secure the communication which was vital to the success of the operations.'
