Sailed from Australia as Corporal 12th LH MG Section. Promoted 2nd Lt, Gallipoli 22 November 1915. Promoted 1st Lt, Tel el Kebir, Egypt, March 1916, further promotion to Captain, France, December 1916. As Machine Gun Officer 3rd Bn, he withdrew the last Machine Gun party from ANZAC on the evacuation of Gallipoli, December 1915.
