'On 29th September, 1918, in the vicinity of BELLICOURT Private BETHUNE went forward with the medical Officer to attend to casualties amongst men working on forward roads. Casualties amongst neighbouring units were heavy and for several hours he attended to wounded in the open under very heavy shell fire. Part of the time he carried on whilst forced to wear a box respirator. When all the wounded had been attended to he removed the Red Cross material to a place of safety, and whilst so doing was himself wounded. He set a fine example of courage and devotion to duty throughout.'
