'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the aadvance, on the 9th August, 1918, towards Rainecourt, when, although wounded, and the only officer left in the company, he continued to lead it towards the objective, and, in spite of great pain, personally superintended the consolidation of the position, moving under heavy machine gun fire, from post to post. He refused to retire until ordered to do so.'
