'During the offensive operations from 21st August to 2nd September, 1918, on the SOMME, Bombardier J. Neal and Gunners J.A. VICKERY and S.W. WHITE, were acting as Battery Linesmen. for the four days ending in the capture of MT. ST. QUENTIN, these three soldiers maintained the O.P. lines from dawn to dusk under very heavy shell fire. During one day no less that 70 breaks occurred on the line. By their devotion to duty they enabled the Battery to render some great assistance to the Infantry and undoubtedly saved a large number of casualties.'
