'For conspicuous gallantry and energy near Proyart, from 23rd-26th August 1918. His efforts at the jumping off line where the battalion was under close machine gun fire, resulted in the successful launching of the attack and a well ordered advance. Throughout he did excellent work, moving to the front when the situation was obscure, and co-ordinating the movements of the various companies, with complete disregard for his own safety.'
