'On 26th September 1917, during the second attack at YPRES, Gunner NICHOLS acted as runner for an F.O.O. When communications broke down, he constantly carried messages back to Infantry Brigade Headquarters and returned to the F.O.O. His work during the whole 48 hours was carried out under very heavy shell fire. his services were invaluable, and he displayed the greatest coolness, absolute disregard of personal safety and the greatest devotion to duty.'
