'This mounted N.C.O. was in charge of wagons proceeding to WESTHOEK east of YPRES on 8th October, 1917. The road between BIRR CROSS Roads and WESTHOEK was heavily shelled and all transport in advance of his party unhooked their teams and left their wagons on the road. Corporal NICHOLSON collected his party and by making a track succeeded in delivering his loads, passing through heavy shell fire on both trips. He set a fine example by accompanying each wagon through the shelled area.'
