Military Medal 'For his determination and devotion to duty during attacks upon an enemy Strong Point and trenches at GUEUDECOURT from the 21st to the 23rd February, 1917. Private Nicholls participated in the first attack on the morning of the 21st when he displayed great bravery in the face of hostile bombing. He was twice wounded but refused to leave his post. In the second assault he was forging ahead with great dash, when severely wounded by a grenade. He set a splendid example throughout.'
