'During the afternoon of the 20th September 1917 whilst consolidating a position at GLENCORSE WOOD east of YPRES a shell killed his platoon Commander, Platoon Sgt. and 4 men. He took charge at once and reorganised the platoon, the members of which were all badly shaken. Later he repeatedly led his men through heavy hostile barrages to the first objective carrying ammunition. By his consistent coolness and fine organisation he set a fine example to his men, and his conduct throughout the whole of the operation showed marked courage and determination.'
