'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When the enemy made a strong counter attack, he worked his gun with great courage until the enemy were within ten yards of his position. He covered the retreat of his men carrying the mortar, with bombs, and by his gallantry and coolness succeeded in saving the gun and crew.'
