'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in command of a company detailed to move gas cylinders from the front line. By thorough organization and personal supervision he carried out this most hazardous operation in daylight over open ground, his determination and resource being the means of averting serious casualties through the bursting of the cylinders. Previous attempts to carry out this work had failed. This officer has also distinguished himself in organizing and leading raids.'
