Military Medal For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near ASCENSION WOOD on 18th September 1918. As his company moved through the RED LINE he rushed well out in front and from a shell hole brought accurate fire on an enemy machine gun keeping it quite until the company was down the slope. In the bombing attack in the evening he was first bayonet man and moving well up ahead of his party did such excellent work with his bayonet that the enemy bombing party fled in panic. He personally accounted for five of the enemy with the bayonet and his rapid movement and drastic methods cleared the way appreciably for the party behind. His conduct had a most beneficial effect on his comrades.'
