'For conspicuous courage and devotion to duty. At PERONNE on 2nd September 1918, as a Company Runner, he carried important messages from the front line to Battalion Headquarters under very heavy shell and machine gun fire through a gassed area. He maintained communication with flank units and throughout the whole of the operations displayed tireless zeal and personal bravery under very trying conditions. He set an inspiring example to all.'
