'During the attack against the enemy positions at VAUVILLERS, near AMIENS, on the afternoon of the 9th August 1918, this man was acting as a stretcher bearer. He worked all day in the open under heavy machine gun and shell fire, bringing in wounded. Again on the morning of the 10th August, during another attack, he worked continuously under heavy machine gun fire, bringing in wounded, and would not cease until all the casualties, which were fairly heavy, were brought in. he volunteered for and went out with another man twice during daylight, almost up to enemy posts, to bring in two wounded men who had got ahead of the attack. He was fired at all the way, and had to crawl almost the whole time. Still the wounded were brought in.'
