'For courage and devotion to duty during the operations on 3rd/6th Oct., 1917 at BROODSEINDE RIDGE east of YPRES. This man showed the greatest disregard for personal danger whilst taking forward rations on his pack horses. Though heavily shelled he kept his horses under control and several times passed through the shelled area to bring up food, water and sand bags which his Brigade required.'
