Admitted to No 2 Stationary Hospital, Canal Zone, Egypt, 21 April 1916 (otitis media); discharged to duty, 26 April 1916.

Proceeded to England (no details recorded). Found guilty, 6th Training Bn, Rollestone, of (10 being absent without leave, 6.30 am, 13 July, to 6.30 am, 17 July 1916; (2) disobedience of orders: forfeited total of 15 days' pay.

Proceeded overseas to France, 18 October 1917; taken on strength, 7th Field Ambulance, 25 October 1917.

Wounded in action, 2 November 1917 (gassed), and admitted to 6th Field Ambulance; transferred to 10th Casualty Clearing Station, 4 November 1917; to 55th General Hospital, Boulogne, 5 November 1917; to England, 15 November 1917, and admitted to Northampton War Hospital, 16 November 1917; discharged on furlough, 17 December 1917, to report to No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 31 December 1917. Marched in to Overseas Training Brigade, Longbridge Deverell, 3 April 1918; to Australian Army Medical Corps Training Depot, Parkhouse, 12 April 1918; to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 11 May 1918.

Found guilty, Weymouth, 18 May 1918, of conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline in that he at Weymouth failed to salute an officer of His Majesty's Forces: awarded 7 days confined to camp.

By sworn declaration, 28 May 1918, assumed the true name of Charles Joseph CULLEN.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Essex', 7 June 1918; disembarked Sydney, 1 August 1918, for onward travel to Melbourne; discharged, 26 September 1918 (medically unfit).

Re-enlisted, Melbourne, 4 October 1918, Sea Transport Section; discharged, 7 November 1918 ('Services no longer required'). Length of service (2nd engagement): 34 days
