Statement, Red Cross File No 2020909, 5061 Pte A.G. CARTER, 56th Bn (patient, No 4 Australian General Hospital, Randwick), 6 August 1917: 'He was hit at Fleurbaix the morning after the big charge. He was a signallerand was running messages to the front line - very dangerous work. He died shortly after he was hit.'

Letter. OC. 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 23 April 1917: ' ... In spite of all efforts his vital powers gradually failed and, I regret to say, he quietly passed away at 4.30 p.m. the same day [20 July].'
