Transferred to 56th Bn, 16 February 1916; taken on strength of 56th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 16 February 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Died of wounds, No 1 Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 20 July 1916 (gun shot wound, abdomen). Buried Estaires Communal Cemetery, 21 July 1916. Statement, Red Cross File No 2020909, 5061 Pte A.G. CARTER, 56th Bn (patient, No 4 Australian General Hospital, Randwick), 6 August 1917: 'He was hit at Fleurbaix the morning after the big charge. He was a signallerand was running messages to the front line - very dangerous work. He died shortly after he was hit.' Letter. OC. 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 23 April 1917: ' ...
