Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He went forward alone under heavy fire, and entered a sap containing an officer and a party of the enemy. He threw a bomb among them, killing the officer, and brought back the remainder, thirteen in all, to his own lines. His arm was severely shattered on the way down to act as guide, but he guided in the relief and reported back on the completion of his task.'
