'At SAILLY-le-SEC in April when acting as Platoon Sergeant his Officer was wounded and although himself badly shaken by Shell fire he took charge of the Platoon. He was wounded at this stage but carried on, re-organised the Platoon and dug in a new position under heavy artillery fire. At MORLANCOURT on 28th/29th July 1918 and at VAUVILLERS ON 8th/9th August 1918 after being promoted to his present rank he greatly assisted his O.C. in re-organising the Company after these engagements and in guiding the Company in the advance. In crossing the SOMME CANAL later his wonderful dash and energy was a splendid example to the remainder of the Company. This N.C.O. has been with this Company in all the actions during the period and in every case has proved himself a brave and fearless leader.'
