'Throughout the operations of 8th August 1918 in front of HAMEL - VILLERS BRETONNEUX, this N.C.O. when his gun was in action with the forward section, directed the work of his gunners with fine coolness and courage, setting them a splendid example. His gun was subjected to machine gun fire throughout the day. When the order to limber up had been give, he assisted in the work with the same coolness, although he could see that on account of intense enemy fire the utmost difficulty in reaching a place of safety would be experienced. On being ordered by his Section Commander to proceed to the rear wagon lines with his gun, he showed initiative, coolness and courage of a high order by the manner in which he conducted his gun through the enemy barrage to a flank and then to the rear position. Placing a N.C.O. in charge he returned to the forward wagon lines and rendered invaluable assistance in getting other wagons clear. This N.C.O.'s work throughout the whole of the days operations when with the main battery as well as the forward section, is deserving of special recognition.'
