War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Sydney, 12 April 1916; disembarked Suez, 18 May 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 6 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 15 June 1916. Taken on strength, 4th Pioneer Bn, in the field, 16 October 1916. Allotted letter 'A' to Regimental Number. Detached to 5th Army Signal School, 7 May 1917; rejoined Bn from detachment, 1 June 1917. On leave to Paris, 21 January 1918; rejoined Bn from leave, 30 January 1918. Admitted to 12th Australian Field Ambulance, 29 April 1918 (acute tonsilitis), and transferred to 46th Casualty Clearing Station; to Ambulance Train No 9, 1 May 1918, and admitted to 5th General Hospital, Rouen, 2 May 1918; discharged to Base Depot, Havre, 7 May 1918. Found guilty, 15 April 1918, of being absent without leave from 10 pm, 13 May, to 9 pm, 14 May 1918: awarded 7 days' confined to Camp, and forfeiture of 2 days' pay.
