War service: Western Front Embarked Melbourne, 11 May 1917; admitted to ship's hospital at sea, 28 June 1917 (influenza); discharged from hospital, 30 June 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 20 July 1917, and marched into 9th Training Bn, Durrington. Marched into Machine Gun Training Depot, Grantham, 24 September 1917. Found guilty, 13 October 1917, of, at Belton Park, neglecting to obey a lawful command of his Commanding Officer: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2. Proceeded overseas to France, 1 January 1918; taken on strength, 24th Machine Gun Company, in the field, 18 January 1918. Unit designation changed to 4th Machine Gun Bn, 1 April 1918.
