'For conspicuous gallantry during the assault on the HINDENBURG Line on 3rd May 1917 in charge of a Lewis Gun. Working in front of our line he kept down the enemy's snipers and facilitated the advance. Later he covered the retirement back to the enemy support trench and eventually go back with his gun still in action.'
