Tried by Field General Court Martial, 28 May 1918, on charge of (1) desertion, in that he absented himself from 17.4.18 until apprehended by the Military Police on 13 May 1918; (2) offering violence to his superior officer in the execution of his duty; pleaded guilty to charge (1), not guilty to charge (2); found guilty on both counts: awarded penal servitude for life; sentence commuted to 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour, 14 June 1918.

Admitted to 5th Military Prison, 26 June 1918, to undergo sentence of 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour.

Commenced return to Australia from Southampton on board HT 'City of Poona', 28 August 1919; disembarked Sydney, 16 May 1919; discharged (termination of period of enlistment), 19 July 1919.
