Found guilty, 29 December 1916, of being absent without leave from Billets from 11 am till 12.30 pm on 26 December 1916: awarded 5 days' Field Punishment No 2.

Wounded in action, 31 January 1917; admitted to 10th Australian Field Ambulance, 1 February 1917 (gun shot wound, left forearm); transferred to No 2 Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 2 February 1917; rejoined unit, 15 February 1917.

Appointed Lance Corporal, 31 May 1917. Detached to Bombing Course, Morebecque, Belgium, 8 July 1917; rejoined unit, 30 July 1917. Promoted Temporary Corporal, 6 August 1917; Temporary Sergeant, 6 November 1917. On leave to England, 25 November 1917; rejoined unit from leave, 12 December 1917. Detached to Brigade School, 13 January 1918; rejoined unit, 23 February 1918. Promoted Sergeant, 17 January 1918. Transferred to 33rd Bn, 30 April 1918. To Army Rest Home, 16 July 1918; rejoined Bn, 26 July 1918.

Wounded in action (2nd occasion), 22 August 1918 (shrapnel wound, shoulder); transferred to 41st Casualty Clearing Station, 22 August 1918; thence by Ambulance Train No 38 to 1st Australian General Hospital, Rouen, 23 August 1918; to England, 25 August 1918, and admitted to Beaufort War Hospital, Bristol, 27 August 1918 (gun shot wound, left shoulder); to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 9 December 1918; discharged on furlough, 12 December 1918, to report to No 4 command Depot, Hurdcott, 27 December 1918. Granted extension of leave from 27 to 30 December 1918.

Awarded the Military Medal.

Granted leave with pay only for Non-Military Educational Leave from 1 February to 30 April 1919, to attend Breach Farm, Newington, Sittingbourne, Kent. Granted extension of leave to 30 July 1919, 30 April 1919.
