Meritorious Service Medal 'For devotion to duty and gallantry under shell fire. This N.C.O. has been employed on clerical duties in charge of D.A.P.M.'s office since May 1917. His work has always been of a very high standard and he has shown himself to be thoroughly reliable and trustworthy. Although the immediate vicinity of his place of work has been bombed and under heavy shell fire on numerous occasions, he has always remained at his post and has shown an utter disregard for his own personal safety. On the night of the 29th September, 1918, during the operations at BELLICOURT, he carried an urgent message from his Headquarters to a provost officer then in BELLICOURT. At the time the road between HARGICOURT and BELLICOURT was being heavily and incessantly shelled. His action set a fine example of courage and devotion to his comrades.'
