Promoted Corporal, 31 July 1916; Lance Sergeant, 18 July 1917; Sergeant, 5 October 1917; commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant, 15 October 1917.

Wounded in action, 28 October 1917 (gun shot wound, jaw). Admitted to 14th General Hospital, Wimereux, 29 October 1917. transferred to England, 8 November 1917, and admitted to Queen Alexandra Hospital (wound, slight). Discharged to No. 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 4 January 1918.

Proceeded overseas to France, 2 February 1918. Promoted Lieutenant, 1 March 1918.

Wounded in action, 22 April 1918 (gun shot wound, right thigh). Transferred to England, 5 May 1918, and admitted to 3rd London General Hospital. Discharged to Overseas Training Brigade, 19 August 1918. Proceeded overseas to France, 2 September 1918.

Granted period of Non-Military Employment, 15 April-15 September 1919 (engineering, Great Western Railway Co., London).

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Macedonia', 31 October 1919; re-embarked Bombay on HT 'Medic', 1 December 1919; disembarked Melbourne, 27 December 1919; discharged, 26 February 1920.
