'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as intelligence officer during an attack. He followed up the attack to collect identifications and information early, sending the results to battalion headquarters without delay. He then took charge of a company, and with three men disposed of the crews of five howitzers, capturing the guns and sixteen prisoners. His prompt courage and determination had a most inspiring effect on his men.'
