Military Medal 'On 20th September, 1917 near WESTHOEK RIDGE a shell burst in the gun position wounding the N.C.O. in charge and killing and wounding all but Private PENFOLD and one other. Although slightly wounded he dug out his comrades, moved the gun to an alternative position, showing excellent judgment in his selection, and opened fire on the enemy who were massing for a counter attack. This done, Private PENFOLD reported the occurrence to his section officer and carried on with the remaining man until assistance arrived.'
