Military Medal 'This driver displayed great presence of mind and courage during the operations in front of HAMEL - VILLERS BRETONNEUX on 8th August 1918. The moving teams of his Section attracted the notice of the enemy and the Wagon Lines were heavily shelled. Driver BLACK's lead horses were wounded and struggled to break loose. He assisted his lead Driver to mount and driving in the wheel himself galloped away to a flank. Leaving the wounded leaders with their driver he returned with the horses to the Wagon Lines under heavy fire, hooked them into another wagon which had lost its team, and still under heavy gun fire, proceeded again to the flank. He again returned, caught four horses that were straying about with their harness on and took them to a place of safety. With the assistance of other drivers he succeeded in getting both wagons to the rear wagon lines. Arriving there he immediately volunteered to go with a team and draw out another wagon which had lost its team> His coolness and courage under heavy fire, and great presence of mind are worthy of special recognition.'
