Meritorious Service Medal 'For gallant leadership and capacity for handling detachments in difficult situations. At WYTSCHAETE on night of 27th December, 1917, his usual conduct was exemplified by his action in rushing to the rescue of a gunner in a dug out blown in by a 5.9S shell, during a bombardment of the position with H.E. and gas shell. The Dug out was blazing at the time and on extricating the injured gunner, Sergeant PETERSONS had himself to be pulled out of the debris. His personal valour is always an example to the men of his Unit.'
