War service: Egypt, Gallipoli Joined Bn at Gallipoli, 26 May 1915. Reported wounded, 8 August 1915. Court of Enquiry, held at sea, 24 March 1916, concluded: 'Killed in action, 8 August 1915.' Statement, 1831 Pte H.J. SEWELL, B Company, 2nd Bn, undated: 'His name should be spelt PETTIT. Pettit was killed either in August or September 1915, during the bombardment. He got hit just outside the Headquarters by a shell. I remember seeing him carried away on a stretcher. One of his chums, Sergeant Roberts, 1834, in the same battalion, went down to the beach afterwards to see him, and he (Roberts) came back and reported that Pettit was dead.'
