Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He and another man were Nos. 1 and 2 of a Lewis gun team with a limited field of fire. The enemy had reached to within 50 yards of our line, when they sprang out of the trench, and standing on the parapet, his comrade fired the gun, resting it on Private Pettitt's shoulder, and continued until the remnants of the attacking line retired, and they were ordered back into the trench. They inflicted severe casualties on the enemy, and contributed largely to the utter defeat of the attack.'
