Wounded in action, 30 March 1917 (gun shot wound, right thigh), and admitted to 15th Australian Field Ambulance; transferred to 5th General Hospital, Rouen, 2 April 1917 (gun shot wound: severe); to England, 19 April 1917, and admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, 20 April 1917. Discharged on furlough, 23 August 1917, to report to Training Depot, Codford, 6 September 1917.

Marched into Overseas Training Brigade, Perham Downs, 13 October 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France, 2 November 1917; rejoined 53rd Bn, in the field, 12 December 1917.

Attached for duty to 14th Field Company Engineers, 19 November 1917; rejoined Bn, 12 December 1917.

Detached On Command to Divisional Demonstration Platoon, 3 January 1918; rejoined 53rd Bn, in the field, 21 October 1918.

Admitted to 14th Australian Field Ambulance, 19 November 1918 (synovitis, knee); transferred to 3rd Australian General Hospital, Abbeville, 20 November 1918; to 1st Australian Convalescent Depot, Havre, 22 November 1918; discharged to Base Depot, Havre, 9 December 1918.

Transferred to Australian Intermediate Base Depot, Havre, 25 March 1919, and taken on strength of No 1 Camp.

Marched out to England for return to Australia, 25 May 1919; marched into No 5 Group, Weymouth, 29 May 1919; into No 3 Group, Codford, 4 June 1919.

Granted leave until recall, 12 January 1920.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Freidrichsruh', 22 January 1920; disembarked Sydney, 12 March 1920; discharged, Sydney, 11 May 1920.
