'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in command of a front line during an intense hostile bombardment, lasting for twelve hours. He displayed the greatest courage and coolness throughout, keeping constant touch with his company headquarters, and by his energy and foresight protecting his men to such an extent that the casualties amongst them were reduced to a minimum.'
