'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This officer carried out reconnaissances immediately behind the infantry advance, reporting on damaged bridges, etc., and within twenty four hours after zero had collected the necessary information for putting the work in hand. He was engaged in this work for three days under heavy shell fire, completing his task under most trying circumstances.'
