Military Medal 'During the period 23/28th October 1917, near ZONNEBEKE, East of YPRES, Private PHILP as Bn. Headquarter Runner did consistent fine work carrying despatches between Bn. Headquarters, front line, and Brigade Headquarters. One one occasion he was knocked over and buried by shell fire. After being got out by a comrade he continued his run and delivered his message, he continued his on duty till the Bn. was relieved.'
Bar to Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty whilst his Battalion was in the Line in front of PETIT SEC BOIS. During the afternoon of 14th April, 1918, when the centre company of the Battalion was being heavily attacked, all communication was cut off, Private PHILP and a comrade went out under heavy fire to repair the damage, his companion was wounded on the way whereupon Private PHILP bound him up and put him a place of safety, he himself then going on alone, and although twice wounded, suceeded in repairing the break thus establishing communication. He then returned and carried his wounded comrade safely back to the dressing station. The splendid example set by him and his cool courageous behaviour inspired all ranks, and his action greatly assisted in beating offa determined enemy attack at a most critical period.'
