'Is again brought to notice for his gallantry and devotion to duty, and for the part played by him during the enemy attack on our lines on the 5th April 1918 near HEBUSTERNE. Despite very heavy Artillery and Machine Gun fire then being directed against our trenches, he mounted the parapet, and crawled out into "No Man's Land" to the hill crest in order to secure better observation of the enemy's movements. By this gallant action he kept his Company Commander well informed as to movements in front, and when the Infantry attack was launched every one was prepared. It is in a measure due to the gallantry of this non-commissioned officer both by this daring exploit, and his subsequent control and direction of his platoon, that were enabled to retain our positions, and inflict such heavy losses on the enemy.'
