'During operations near VERMAND North West of ST. QUENTIN from 11th/16th September, 1918, this N.C.O. did splendid work. Rushing forward with a patrol, he was constantly in touch with the enemy, though subjected to heavy Machine Gun fire. He was responsible for sending back to his Platoon Commander valuable information regarding enemy machine gun positions, and also rendered valuable service in clearing the way for his Company to advance. His cheerful and courageous behaviour was inspiring to all.'
