'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When in command of a raiding party he located an enemy machine gun enfilading his party as they entered the trench from a spot about 40 yards to his flank. He attacked the gun single-handed, killing one of the crew, taking two prisoners and capturing the gun. He then engaged another enemy post single-handed, killing three and wounding two of the garrison. His gallantry during the raid, and the care with which he made his preparations for the enterprise, greatly helped to make the raid as successful as it was.'
