War service: France, Belgium. Arrived at Plymouth, England, 9 January 1917; trained on Salisbury Plain, and drafted to France, April 1917. Taken on strength, 27th Bn, at Pozieres. Wounded at Bullecourt, 27 April 1917; invalided to England, and returned to France November 1917. Rejoined unit at Ypres, Belgium, and subsequently served at Pozieres and Mont St Quentin until the end of the war. Arrived back in Australia on board the 'Persic' in August 1919.

After discharge from the Army, he rejoined Holden's, where he had worked as a motor trimmer, and worked in the production engineering section at the General Motors-Holden plant at Woodville, South Australia.

Married Una Maude (nee Dwyer, b. Balhannah, 1909; d. Adelaide, 1988) at St Pauls' Church, Adelaide, 21 December 1935; two children: Max, b. 16 October 1936, and Rex, b. 10 September 1937.

Served in World War II in the St John Ambulance Brigade.
