Originally enlisted 19 October 1914 with the rank of Sergeant,to serve with the 1st Australian General Hospital, embarking at Brisbane per Transport A55 'Kyarra' on 21 November 1914.

He was declared medically unfit, returned to Australia.

He re-enlisted as a Private in the 31st Battalion, 8th Reinforcement, on 19 July 1916, and embarked at Brisbane per H.M.A.T. 'Boorara' on 16 August 1916.

He left the theatre of war for his return to Australia 4 May 1917.
