Found guilty, 5 May 1917, of talking in the ranks: awarded 2 days' confined to barracks.

Proceeded overseas to France, 23 August 1917; taken on strength, 40th Bn, in the field, 1 September 1917.

Wounded in action, 12 October 1917 (gun shot wound, chest and eye); admitted to 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station; transferred by Ambulance Train No 29 to 18th General Hospital, Rouen, 14 October 1917; to England, 18 October 1917, and admitted to Beaufort War Hospital, Bristol, 19 October 1917; transferred to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 24 January 1918; discharged on furlough, 6 February 1918, to report to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 20 February 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Kenilworh Castle', 12 March 1918; transshipped to HT 'Field Marshall' at Durban, 23 April 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 22 May 1918; discharged (medically unfit), 26 July 1918.
