'On 4th October, 1917, in the vicinity of WESTHOEK RIDGE when in charge of a stretcher squad exhibited marked gallantry. He kept his squad going constantly for 30 hours. Frequently it was necessary to go through heavy enemy barrage. At 7 p.m. of 4th October, 1917, barrage was particularly heavy but this man kept his squad in action quite regardless of his own safety.'
