Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For gallantry and initiative at Semakh on 15 September 1918. He was acting as troop leader when a great part of the troop became casualties. He, under heavy fire, collected all the available men and led them behind some buildings. He then dismounted for action and attacked the enemy, succeeding in killing a good number, and capturing the remainder. He displayed splendid courage and dash, and set a fine example to his men.'

War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Palestine Tried by Field General Court Martial, 24-25 January 1918, on charges of (1) conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline in that he, at Belah on the 20th January 1918, between the hours of 0100 and 0130, whilst under the influence of liquor created a disturbance in the Squadron Lines'; (2) drunkenness, in that he at the time and place of aforesaid, was drunk. Pleaded 'Not guilty' to both charges; found 'Guilty' on the first charge, 'Not guilty' on the second charge. Sentenced to take the rank and precedence as if his appointment to the rank of Sergeant bore the date 23.1.18.' Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Delta', 5 February 1919; arrived Melbourne, 7 March 1919, for onward travel by sea to Brisbane; discharged (medically unfit), Hobart, 3 August 1919.
